St Paul's Catacombs
About This Museum
Tucked away on the quiet streets of Rabat, just a stone's throw from the ancient capital of Mdina, lies one of Malta's most hauntingly beautiful secrets. Descending into St. Paul's Catacombs feels like stepping out of the Mediterranean sun and directly into the Roman era. This isn't a single tomb but a sprawling, labyrinthine underground city of the dead, with dark corridors opening into surprisingly ornate burial chambers carved directly into the limestone. You can almost feel the whispers of history in the cool, still air, surrounded by stone tables where grieving families would hold ceremonial feasts.
Collection Highlights
The main draw is exploring the interconnected network of tombs themselves, including the unique 'agape table' carved for funeral banquets and seeing the fascinating mix of Pagan, Jewish, and early Christian burial styles side-by-side.
Visitor Information
You only get to see a section of this massive complex, but it's more than enough to grasp its scaleβwear good shoes as the floors are uneven. Itβs located in Rabat and is super easy to combine with a trip to Mdina; just be sure to check their opening times online as they can vary.
