Malta at War Museum
About This Museum
You know how they say Malta was the most bombed place on Earth? This museum, tucked into the old coastal defences of Birgu, makes that history feel incredibly real. It’s not just a building; it's a former army barracks and gun post that actually took direct hits during the war. Walking through the thick stone walls, you can almost hear the air raid sirens. It really hammers home what the islanders endured.
Collection Highlights
The star of the show is a massive, preserved anti-aircraft gun you can stand right next to. But for me, the most gripping part was descending into an authentic underground air-raid shelter carved into the rock – it sends shivers down your spine. They also have personal letters and heartbreakingly simple possessions from civilians who sheltered there for weeks.
Visitor Information
It's in Birgu, which is a gorgeous, historic city well worth exploring itself. Definitely check their website for screening times of the historical film they show – it provides amazing context before you wander through.
Architecture & Building
It's housed in a classic, sturdy British colonial-era barracks made of traditional Maltese limestone, built as part of the Couvre Porte Counterguard complex.
