Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral
About This Museum
Everyone comes to Karlovy Vary for the spas, but you stay for moments of awe like the one you find at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul. From the outside, its trio of golden onion domes gleams against the Czech sky, a stunning promise of what's inside. And that promise is more than kept when you step into a sanctuary ablaze with color, where every inch of wall and ceiling is covered in intricate murals and icons. It’s a breathtaking, fully immersive art experience that feels a world away from the bustling colonnades just down the hill.
Collection Highlights
The entire interior is the highlight—a symphony of vibrant frescoes depicting biblical scenes and saints that cover the walls and soar up into the dome. Look for the stunning, multi-tiered iconostasis, a golden screen filled with meticulously painted icons that separates the nave from the altar.
Visitor Information
It's centrally located but check their website for service times if you want to see it in full swing; otherwise, it's generally open for quiet visits throughout the day. Just remember it's a working church, so be respectful.
Architecture & Building
This is a spectacular example of Russian Orthodox architecture, instantly recognizable by its signature gold-plated onion domes topped with orthodox crosses. The facade is a lovely pale pink and white, making those brilliant domes pop even more.
