Museum Kampa
About This Museum
Nestled on the banks of the Vltava, Museum Kampa occupies a beautifully restored former mill, its industrial bones now humming with modern creativity. The journey begins with František Kupka's pioneering abstract canvases, where color and form seem to dance in a symphony of early twentieth-century innovation. Down another corridor, you're confronted by the whimsical, melancholic sculptures of Otto Gutfreund, his cubist figures frozen in bronze and plaster. It’s a space that feels both intimate and expansive, where the gentle light from the riverside windows illuminates art that helped define a region.
Collection Highlights
The heart of the museum is its stellar collection of František Kupka's abstract works, tracing his journey from symbolism to pure abstraction. Equally compelling are the dynamic cubist sculptures of Otto Gutfreund and a fascinating collection of Central European artists who worked in parallel with, but often outside, Western narratives.
Visitor Information
Grab a coffee at the cafe with its stunning terrace practically hovering over the river—it's a perfect spot to decompress after soaking in all that art. It's located on Kampa Island, a short and very pleasant walk from the Charles Bridge, making it an ideal cultural escape from the main tourist trail.
Architecture & Building
The building itself is a Sova's Mills, a historic complex of former mill buildings that has been sensitively modernized with vast windows and industrial-chic interiors, creating a beautiful dialogue between old brickwork and contemporary design.
