About This Museum
The Mayrau Mine isn't your typical museum; it's a time capsule of Czechia's industrial heart. For over a century, this site near Kladna was a bustling coal mine, finally halting operations in 1997 and essentially freezing in time. Today, you can walk through the authentic winding engine room, its massive machinery still in place, and even see the 'Pinkava' locker room where miners' work clothes still hang from the ceiling, left exactly as they were on the final shift. The atmosphere is palpably real and slightly haunting, offering a raw, unfiltered look into the lives of the men who worked deep underground.
Collection Highlights
Don't miss the perfectly preserved winding tower and engine house, which controlled the descent of cages into the pit. The miner's changing room is unforgettable, with their personal lockers and grimy gear suspended overhead to dry. You can also see a collection of historic mining locomotives and venture into a simulated coal seam to grasp the cramped, dark conditions.

It's an open-air site with both indoor and outdoor exhibits, so dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes for walking on uneven ground. Guided tours are often available and really bring the place to life with stories from former miners.
