Malta National Aquarium
About This Museum
It's a strange and wonderful thing to find a building that seems to have crash-landed from a sci-fi film onto the Maltese coastline. The structure, all sharp angles and shimmering blue glass, is designed to look like a starfish with its arms outstretched towards the Mediterranean. Inside, you don't just see fish behind glass; you're immersed in their world, from the silent glide of a native stingray to the frantic dance of a shimmering school of bogues. It’s a place that connects you directly to the life just beyond its walls.
Collection Highlights
The main tank is a stunning centerpiece, showcasing local species like the common octopus and dusky grouper in a carefully crafted reef environment. Beyond the fish, there's a fascinating 'Mediterranean Zone' where you can come face-to-face with Hermann's tortoises and watch vibrant green tree frogs in their humid enclosure.
Visitor Information
After wandering through the aquatic halls, the on-site cafe is the perfect spot for a coffee with a view of the sea. It's located right on the Qawra coastfront, making it an easy stop on a day of exploring.
