Loket Castle
About This Museum
You'd never guess that this formidable castle, perched on a granite outcrop above the Ohře River, was once slated for demolition to make way for a modern prison. Thankfully, it survived, and today its thick walls hold tales of kings, prisoners, and artisans. Stepping inside feels like walking through layers of time, from the dungeons to the opulent ceremonial hall where couples now marry. It’s a place where history isn't just displayed; it's palpable in every stone.
Collection Highlights
Beyond the chilling prison block with its original cells, you'll find one of Europe's finest collections of historic porcelain and ceramics. The star is a massive 'Loket Altar' tureen from 1792, alongside delicate Thun tableware and intricate painted pieces that showcase the region's craft.
Visitor Information
The castle is open year-round, though hours shift with the seasons—best to check their website before you go. Wear comfortable shoes; you'll be climbing old staircases and exploring uneven courtyards.
Architecture & Building
A classic Romanesque fortress from the 12th century, later Gothicized with Baroque additions, all built from local stone that seems to grow straight out of the rock itself.
