Lobkowicz Palace
About This Museum
Tucked away within the Prague Castle complex, the Lobkowicz Palace feels less like a sterile museum and more like you've been invited into a family's grand, centuries-old home. You can practically feel the weight of history in these rooms, which have witnessed everything from royal intrigue to modern rebirth after the family's property was restituted post-communism. Wandering through the ornately decorated salons, I kept getting distracted by the incredible views of the city sprawling out below the windows. It’s an intimate and surprisingly personal glimpse into a dynasty that helped shape Central European culture.
Collection Highlights
I was completely stopped in my tracks by two original scores in Beethoven's own handwriting, a testament to the family's patronage. Then there's Bruegel the Elder's mesmerizing 'Haymaking,' a painting so detailed you could get lost in it for an hour. Don't miss the delicate portrait of a young girl by Velázquez or the stunning collection of ceremonial armor and rare musical instruments scattered throughout.
Visitor Information
It's right there in Prague Castle, so it's easy to weave into your castle visit—just look for Jiřská street. I'd highly recommend splurging on the audio tour; it's narrated by family members themselves and adds this wonderful layer of storytelling you wouldn't get otherwise.
Architecture & Building
The palace itself is a beautiful example of Baroque elegance, but with all the cozy, lived-in charm of a noble residence that has been adapted and loved over many generations.
