Housed in a beautifully restored Victorian canalside warehouse, the museum sits right on the water, where you can almost hear the echoes of barges being loaded with goods. The space is intimate and thoughtfully curated, blending the rustic charm of exposed brick with clean, modern displays that tell a layered story of this corner of Powys. It’s a genuine local gem that makes history feel immediate and tangible.

Collection Highlights

You can't miss the stunning Bronze Age log boat, hauled from the local peat, which is just incredible to see up close. I was also completely drawn in by their collection of intricate Welsh love spoons and the detailed exhibits on the Montgomeryshire Canal itself, which really anchor you to this specific landscape.

Visitor Information

Heads up for anyone planning a trip – the museum itself is currently closed for a major redevelopment and won't reopen until Summer 2025. But the Welshpool Library next door remains open if you're in the area and need a bookish fix while you wait for the grand reopening.
