Museum Of Scottish Lighthouses
About This Museum
People don't just come to this museum for the history; they come for the feeling of standing atop a windswept cliff, gazing out at the same North Sea view that has guided mariners for centuries. The journey begins at the Kinnaird Head Lighthouse, a remarkable 16th-century castle-turned-beacon that was mainland Scotland's very first. Inside, you'll find yourself immersed in the world of the lighthouse keeper, surrounded by the massive, beautifully polished brass optics and the haunting foghorns that were once the soundtrack of this rugged coast. It’s a deeply personal and atmospheric tribute to the keepers and their families, whose isolated vigils kept countless ships safe.
Collection Highlights
The star exhibit is the hyper-radial optic, a colossal First Order Fresnel lens so rare only a handful exist worldwide. You can also climb the original tower to see its light in action and explore recreated keeper's quarters that feel frozen in time.
Visitor Information
It's perched right on the coast in Fraserburgh, so wear a warm layer even in summer—the sea breeze is part of the authentic experience. Be sure to book the guided tour to get inside the historic lighthouse itself; it’s the only way up.
Architecture & Building
The main building is a modern museum, but its heart is the extraordinary Kinnaird Head Lighthouse—a stout, stone tower that was literally built into and on top of a rugged 1570s castle.
