The Higgins Bedford

About This Museum

Tucked away in the heart of Bedford, The Higgins is this wonderfully eclectic museum complex that grew out of the old Cromwell Brewery buildings. It’s the kind of place where you can wander from a gallery of Victorian art straight into an archaeological dig, all under one roof. The atmosphere feels genuinely local and layered, like you're uncovering the town's secrets room by room. I love how it effortlessly blends social history with natural wonders and creative works.

Collection Highlights

You absolutely have to see the exquisite Bunyan Collection, which includes personal items belonging to Bedford's most famous son, John Bunyan. Then there's the stunning 'Bedfordshire Life' gallery, where you'll find everything from Saxon treasure hoards to delicate lace and a full-sized replica of a traditional narrowboat cabin.

Visitor Information

It's right on Castle Lane, and best of all, general admission is completely free – you can just pop in for a quick look or spend a whole afternoon. They've got a lovely café tucked in the courtyard, perfect for a coffee after exploring all those nooks and crannies.

Architecture & Building

The main charm comes from its repurposed 19th-century brewery buildings; think handsome red brick and industrial character seamlessly fused with clean, modern gallery spaces.
