Grampian Transport Museum
About This Museum
You'd never expect to find a place like this tucked away in rural Aberdeenshire, but the Grampian Transport Museum is an absolute gem for anyone even remotely curious about how we get around. It's not some stuffy old hall; it feels more like a massive, enthusiastic garage sale of Scottish motoring history where you're encouraged to get hands-on. The collection is brilliantly eclectic, stretching from horse-drawn carriages right up to a crazy 1970s custom car made from a fighter jet canopy. We spent ages just wandering through, pressing buttons and soaking up the stories behind every weird and wonderful vehicle.
Collection Highlights
The star for me was definitely the 'JET Age' car – a wild, bubble-shaped vehicle built locally using the canopy from a Gloster Javelin fighter plane. You can't miss the gleaming vintage steam lorries either, and they have this fantastic display of classic Scottish-built commercial vehicles that tell a whole different side of the region's story.
Visitor Information
After all that exploring, their on-site cafe is the perfect spot for a cuppa and a slice of cake – trust me, you'll need it. It's easy to find just off Montgarrie Road in Alford, and there's plenty of parking, which feels fitting for a transport museum.
Architecture & Building
From the outside, it's a mix of modern, clean-lined exhibition halls that give you hints of the interesting things inside, sitting comfortably in the Aberdeenshire landscape.
