World of Wedgwood
About This Museum
You might not know that the very first thing Josiah Wedgwood perfected was a revolutionary green glaze, and you can see some of those early pieces right here. This isn't some dusty old hall; it's a living, breathing tribute to the clay that built Stoke-on-Trent. You can feel the history in the air, from the 18th-century creamware that took the aristocracy by storm to the iconic blue and white jasperware that's still made on-site. It’s a place where you can watch a master potter throw a vase one minute and get your own hands muddy the next.
Collection Highlights
Look for the 'Portland Vase', an impossibly delicate black-and-white glass masterpiece they spent years figuring out how to reproduce. The 'Frog Service' made for Catherine the Great of Russia is another stunner, with over 1,200 hand-painted views of the British countryside. And don't miss their collection of historic trial pieces – you get to see the brilliant mistakes and experiments that led to their greatest triumphs.
Visitor Information
Pop on some comfy shoes because the factory tour is a must-do – seeing the 'throwing' and 'hollow-ware' shops in action is pure magic. Afterwards, you can book a spot to paint your own pottery or just wander through their enormous shop, which has every piece you could possibly imagine.
Architecture & Building
The building itself is a modern, light-filled space designed to echo the clean lines of Wedgwood's classic forms, with vast windows that flood the galleries with natural light.
