World of Glass
About This Museum
You might not expect a cathedral to glassmaking in the heart of St Helens, but that's exactly what you'll find at the World of Glass. It's built right on the site of the old Pilkington works, where the town's industrial heart once beat. Inside, it’s a place where fire and sand are transformed into delicate art and everyday objects, telling a story that stretches back to the Romans on this very spot. You can feel the heat from the live glassblowing demos and even grab a coffee while watching craftsmen shape molten glass.
Collection Highlights
Don't miss the 'Glass Floors to Go' exhibit – it’s a quirky look at how Pilkington's float glass ended up in millions of homes. The Roman collection, dug up locally, shows just how long we've been making glass here. And keep an eye out for the stunning contemporary pieces from local artists that prove the craft is very much alive.
Visitor Information
Check the times for the glassblowing demos – they're the best part and you don't want to miss them. Afterwards, pop into the cafe; it's got great views over the canal. The gift shop is full of beautiful, hand-blown pieces if you're after a proper souvenir.
Architecture & Building
It's a real mix of old and new – a bold, modern steel-and-glass structure built around and incorporating the original red brick Victorian bottle ovens, which stand like ancient sentinels in the main hall.
