About This Museum

Tucked away on the Lincoln Highway in Whyalla Norrie, this absolute gem of a museum tells the story of South Australia's industrial and maritime heart. You can't miss the colossal HMAS Whyalla, a genuine WWII corvette warship, sitting proudly on dry land right outside. Inside, the air smells of salt and history, with fascinating exhibits detailing the town's shipbuilding past and the treacherous waters of Spencer Gulf. It’s a wonderfully personal place where you feel connected to the people who built this region.

Collection Highlights

The star is undoubtedly the HMAS Whyalla, the first ship built in the city, which you can actually walk onto and explore. Don't miss the detailed displays on the BHP steelworks and the incredible story of the 'Whyalla Star' drogue rescue—it’s local history that gives you chills.

Visitor Information

It's easy to find right on the main road into town, and there's plenty of parking. The volunteers here are fantastic—full of stories you won't find on any plaque.

Architecture & Building

The main building is a modern, no-fuss structure, but it's completely upstaged by the incredible sight of a massive warship beached permanently in its yard.
