Migration Museum
About This Museum
Tucked away on Kintore Avenue, the Migration Museum tells the real, often gritty, stories of how this state was built. It's less about dusty artifacts and more about people—the waves of newcomers, from the earliest colonists to post-war Europeans and more recent arrivals, who've all shaped South Australia. You walk through and you're hearing their voices, seeing their treasured possessions and feeling the weight of their decisions. It’s a deeply personal look at the courage and resilience woven into our community's fabric.
Collection Highlights
The 'Leaving Dublin' exhibit is a heart-wrencher, with a recreated quayside that makes you feel the goodbyes. Another powerful spot is the 'Many Hearts, One Blood' display, which confronts our history with honesty and explores its impact on First Nations peoples.
Visitor Information
It's right in the cultural precinct next to the State Library and Museum, so you can make a real day of it. Best part? Entry is by donation, so everyone can come in and connect with these stories.
Architecture & Building
Housed in what was once the city's Destitute Asylum, the old bluestone buildings themselves are a piece of history. They've got that classic 19th-century colonial look, thick walls and all, which adds a layer of gravity to the stories told inside.
