You won't believe it, but the V&A was the first museum in the world to have a gas-lit evening opening so that working people could visit after their shifts. That spirit of making incredible art accessible to everyone still feels alive today. I got lost for hours wandering through its labyrinth of grand, tiled halls and surprisingly intimate galleries. It's less a stuffy old museum and more a massive, beautiful treasure chest where you can stumble upon anything from a tiny piece of Renaissance jewelry to an entire, ripped-from-history cast of Trajan's Column.
Collection Highlights
The Cast Courts are mind-blowing—they're filled with full-scale plaster copies of European monuments, so you can walk right up to a replica of Michelangelo's David. I also loved the wildly ornate Great Bed of Ware, an enormous Elizabethan bed mentioned in Shakespeare's 'Twelfth Night,' and seeing actual clothes worn centuries ago in the fashion gallery.
Visitor Information
Entry to the permanent collection is free, which is fantastic, though you'll need a ticket for their big temporary exhibitions (book those online). Don't miss the central courtyard garden for a coffee break, and their design shop is dangerously tempting—I wanted to buy everything.
Architecture & Building
It's a magnificent Victorian pile of red brick and Portland stone, all dramatic arches and ornate carvings. Inside, it feels like a palace dedicated to art, with soaring ceilings, intricate ironwork, and even a stunning glass-blown chandelier by Dale Chihuly swirling above the main entrance.
