About This Museum

You'd never guess this unassuming little cottage in a sleepy Dorset village was the birthplace of the entire British trade union movement. Stepping inside feels less like entering a museum and more like walking into the actual 1830s home of one of the labourers arrested for forming a secret society. The air is thick with their story, told through their own words and simple possessions. It’s a profoundly moving and surprisingly radical place that packs a real emotional punch.

Collection Highlights

You can see the actual, spine-tingling oath the six men swore, sealed with a square. There's also a chilling replica of the prison hulk they were transported to in Australia, alongside poignant personal items like their tools and letters that make their ordeal heartbreakingly real.

Visitor Information

It's free to enter, though you'll definitely want to leave a donation. Check opening times before you go as they can be seasonal, and allow at least an hour to really absorb everythingβ€”it's small but powerful.

Architecture & Building

Housed in a humble, chocolate-box style 19th-century thatched cottage that looks like it belongs on a postcard, which makes the radical history inside all the more striking.
