The Whitworth
About This Museum
Tucked away in the parkland of the University of Manchester, The Whitworth has been a sanctuary for art lovers since the Victorian era. It began as a gift to the city's working people, a place to find beauty and quiet reflection. Over the years, it's blossomed into so much more than just a gallery, with its modern glass wings reaching out into the trees. You get this wonderful feeling of art, nature, and history all woven together here.
Collection Highlights
Don't miss their stunning collection of historic watercolours and British textiles, which feel particularly at home here. They've also got these powerful, large-scale wallpapers by the Turner Prize-winning artist Lubaina Himid that stop you in your tracks. And always keep an eye out for what's new in their sculpture court or hanging in the grand old trees outside.
Visitor Information
It's right on Oxford Road, that great big university thoroughfare, so it's easy to get to. Best of all? General admission is completely free, just walk right in. The café is a local favourite too – you can sit amongst the art or spill out onto the terrace when the sun's out.
Architecture & Building
The original red-brick Victorian building has this lovely, solid civic presence. But what really defines it now are those bold, modern extensions of glass and steel that blur the line between being inside the gallery and being in the park.
