The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery
About This Museum
People come here for two things, really: the Spitfire and the pots. And we've got them in spades. You'll find yourself wandering from rooms filled with delicate, gilded bone china that made Stoke-on-Trent famous straight into the shadow of the city's other great creation—the actual RJ Mitchell-designed Spitfire that hangs in all its graceful power from the ceiling. It’s a place that perfectly captures our local spirit, this blend of delicate artistry and sheer industrial muscle. You leave understanding that this wasn't just a city of factories, but a place where hands shaped both teacups and history.
Collection Highlights
The star is undoubtedly the WWII Spitfire, but don't rush past the ceramics galleries. They tell the whole story, from early slipware to Josiah Wedgwood's revolutionary creations and those beautifully quirky Victorian Toby jugs.
Visitor Information
You'll find us right in the Cultural Quarter in Hanley. Best of all? General admission won't cost you a penny, though they kindly ask for a donation to help keep the lights on.
Architecture & Building
It's a solid, post-war building typical of its time, practical and unassuming from the outside—but don't let that fool you, the treasures inside are what truly matter.
