About This Museum
Tucked away on the Annan Road in Eastriggs, The Devil's Porridge tells the incredible, almost-forgotten story of HM Factory Gretna. During the First World War, this stretch of the Solway coast became the largest munitions factory on earth, employing thousands of women who mixed the 'devil's porridge' – a volatile paste of cordite. The museum doesn't just display objects; it shares their personal tales. You can almost hear the ghosts of those 'munitionettes' in the quiet hum of the exhibits.
Collection Highlights
You'll find a full-scale reconstruction of a worker's hostel bunk, complete with a humble straw mattress. There are original rolls of cordite, looking deceptively like thick, brown spaghetti, and poignant photographs of the women with their faces stained yellow from the chemicals. One of the most moving things is simply reading their letters home.
Visitor Information
It's easy to find just off the A75, and there's plenty of parking. The staff are wonderfully knowledgeable, often with their own family connections to the factory, so don't be shy about asking questions.

Housed in a modern, purpose-built building that sits comfortably on the edge of the old factory site, its clean lines and red brick pay a subtle homage to the vast, vanished industrial township that once stood here.
