About This Museum

You won't believe this place – it looks like a grand French chateau that somehow landed in the middle of the Durham countryside. It was the dream of a 19th-century couple, John and Joséphine Bowes, who filled it with all the incredible art and treasures they collected across Europe. Wandering through its three floors feels like exploring a wonderfully eccentric aristocrat's home, where you can turn a corner from an Old Master painting and find a 500-year-old automated silver swan. The sheer variety is staggering, from delicate porcelain to imposing furniture, all housed in this absolutely breathtaking building.

Collection Highlights

The star of the show is undoubtedly the Silver Swan, an incredible 18th-century automaton that preens itself and catches a fish. You'll also find stunning pieces like El Greco's 'The Tears of Saint Peter' and Canaletto's detailed Venetian scenes. The fashion and textile gallery is a real treat, filled with gorgeous historic gowns.

Visitor Information

It's in Barnard Castle – yes, the town that lent its name to that eye test! – and there's a lovely cafe and gardens if you need a break from all the splendor. Definitely give yourself a good few hours to explore properly.

Architecture & Building

It’s built in a spectacular French Renaissance style, all ornate stonework and grand windows, making it look completely unexpected for its location.
