About This Museum

Tucked away on a narrow, flagstone-paved street in the heart of Stromness, this museum feels like stepping into the town's attic. It’s a wonderfully dense and creaky-floored place that has been gathering the stories of Orkney for generations. You won't find sterile glass boxes here; instead, it's a captivating jumble of natural history specimens, maritime relics, and everyday objects that tell a rich, local story.

Collection Highlights

One room is dominated by an enormous skeleton of a fin whale, while another holds poignant reminders of the scuttled German High Seas Fleet at Scapa Flow. Don't miss the displays on the Hudson's Bay Company, which recruited many Orcadians, or the beautifully crafted model ships that fill every available nook.
