Spode Museum
About This Museum
Tucked away within the historic Spode Works, this little museum feels like stepping directly into the heart of British pottery history. I was immediately struck by the sheer elegance of the iconic blue and white 'Willow Pattern' pieces, displayed alongside vibrant, almost whimsical, polychrome game birds. The air hums with a quiet industry, punctuated by the gentle scratch of brushes from the on-site painting demonstrations. It’s a wonderfully intimate experience that connects you to the living craft, not just the finished objects.
Collection Highlights
The star exhibits are undoubtedly the pristine examples of Spode's bone china and their famous Blue Italian ware. Seeing a painter meticulously hand-gilding a plate with real gold leaf right in front of you is absolutely mesmerizing and a highlight you won't forget.
Visitor Information
You'll find it on the factory grounds in Stoke – it's compact, so an hour is plenty. Definitely time your visit to catch one of the live painting demos; they're free and happen throughout the day.
Architecture & Building
It's housed right in the original red-brick Spode factory buildings, a proper Georgian-era industrial complex that feels authentically worn-in and full of character.
