Somerset House
About This Museum
You know that grand, sprawling building on the Strand that looks like it's straight out of a royal history book? That's Somerset House. It started life in the 18th century as a palace for nobles, and you can still feel that stately past echoing through its vast courtyards. Now, it's this wonderfully alive place where you can wander from world-class art galleries to a buzzing cafe, and in the winter, the main courtyard transforms into a magical ice rink. Itβs less a stuffy museum and more a beautiful public playground right on the Thames.
Collection Highlights
The star is definitely The Courtauld Gallery, where you can get almost uncomfortably close to Van Gogh's self-portrait with his bandaged ear and lose yourself in Manet's 'A Bar at the Folies-Bergère'. Beyond the paintings, they have these fascinating, ever-changing exhibitions on everything from design to film.
Visitor Information
The main courtyard is free to just walk into and explore, which is perfect for a coffee or just soaking up the atmosphere. If you want to see the art, you'll need a ticket for The Courtauld β it's right there inside. And definitely check their website before you go; they're always hosting some open-air film screening or food market.
Architecture & Building
It's a masterpiece of Neoclassical design β think immense stone columns, sweeping archways, and perfectly symmetrical wings surrounding that huge central courtyard made of Yorkstone.
