Skara Brae Visitor Centre
About This Museum
People come to Skara Brae to walk in the footsteps of our Neolithic ancestors, and it absolutely delivers. You first see the incredible stone dwellings, hunkered down against the Orkney wind, looking almost like they were abandoned yesterday. The real magic is peering into those ancient homes and seeing the stone beds, dressers, and hearths exactly where they were left over 5,000 years ago. It’s a profoundly moving experience that connects you directly to the daily lives of a long-vanished community. You leave with a completely new perspective on what 'ancient history' really means.
Collection Highlights
The star attraction is the sprawling Neolithic village itself, preserved under sand dunes for millennia. Inside the centre, you can get up close with beautifully carved stone objects and mysterious grooved ware pottery found on site.
Visitor Information
It's run by Historic Scotland, so members get in free. Definitely book ahead in summer as it's a hugely popular spot—the weather can be wild and wonderful, so pack a good coat no matter the season!
Architecture & Building
The visitor centre is modern and low-slung, built to blend into the dramatic coastal landscape without distracting from the ancient site it protects.
