About This Museum

Tucked away in Irvine's harbour, the Scottish Maritime Museum feels less like a static gallery and more like a living, breathing chronicle of Scotland's intimate relationship with the sea. The heart of the experience is the colossal Linthouse Building itself, a former engine shop where the ghosts of industry seem to linger in the vast, airy space. You're greeted by the towering masts of historic vessels and the smell of old wood and salt, an atmosphere that's both awe-inspiring and deeply personal. It’s a place that tells its stories not just through plaques, but through the sheer, tangible presence of the ships built by Scottish hands.

Collection Highlights

The star exhibit is often the MV Kyles, the last surviving Scottish-built puffer, resting proudly on dry land. Nearby, you can wander past sleek yachts and clinker-built fishing boats or get lost in smaller treasures like beautifully carved figureheads and a recreated 1920s shipyard worker's flat.

Visitor Information

It's easy to find just off Harbour Road in Irvine; wear comfortable shoes as you'll be doing a fair bit of walking across the old shipyard floors. Check their website for seasonal opening times before you head over.

Architecture & Building

The museum is housed within the magnificent Linthouse Engine Shop, a soaring Victorian-era industrial building of red brick and vast iron-framed windows that was once part of Alexander Stephen and Sons' shipbuilding empire.
