Salford Museum & Art Gallery
About This Museum
If these walls could talk, they'd tell you stories of Salford's journey from a bustling industrial town to the place it is today. The old part of the building itself was once the Royal Museum and Public Library, a real beacon of learning for the working people back in 1850. Stepping inside feels like a conversation with the past, especially when you turn a corner and find yourself on a reconstructed Victorian cobbled street, complete with the sound of footsteps and shop windows to peer into. Upstairs, you're met with the quiet hush of the art galleries, where the grand paintings from that same era watch over you.
Collection Highlights
You can't miss 'Lark Hill Place', our wonderfully atmospheric recreated Victorian street with its little sweet shop and chemist. Then there's our strong collection of nineteenth-century British art, including works by L.S. Lowry who was a regular visitor, plus all sorts of changing exhibitions that keep things fresh.
Visitor Information
It's right there on The Crescent, just across the road from Peel Park, and the best part is that it's still free to pop in. They're open every day except Monday, so it's perfect for a spontaneous visit when you're in the area.
Architecture & Building
It's a handsome, classic Victorian building of red brick and stone, speaking to its purpose as a place of civic pride and knowledge from that era.
