Port Sunlight Museum
About This Museum
It's a little-known fact that this entire village, with its charming cottages and sprawling parkland, was built by a soap magnate for his factory workers. The museum itself feels less like a formal institution and more like stepping directly into the story of that ambitious social experiment. You can almost hear the clatter of clogs on the original cobblestones outside as you explore rooms filled with personal treasures from the people who called this place home. It’s a wonderfully intimate look at a radical vision for community living.
Collection Highlights
Look for William Lever's original architectural models for the village, displayed alongside poignant family photographs and even some of the first-ever wrappers for Sunlight Soap. The recreated period rooms, complete with a 'donkey stone' for scrubbing steps, are particularly evocative.
Visitor Information
After soaking in all that history, don't miss the lovely little tea room tucked away inside—it's the perfect spot for a proper pot of tea and a slice of cake. The village is your real exhibition space, so save time for a wander through the stunning Dell park.
Architecture & Building
Housed in one of the original, beautifully preserved Edwardian buildings, it features classic red brickwork, white-painted sash windows, and a sense of solid craftsmanship that defines the entire model village.
