About This Museum

You have to see this place—it's not your typical museum. It's tucked away in this gorgeous old Georgian townhouse on Priestgate, and stepping inside feels like walking into a grand old home that's full of secrets. The real jaw-dropper is stumbling upon a perfectly preserved Victorian operating theatre, complete with the original wooden operating table; it’s both fascinating and a little bit chilling. Upstairs, you can wander from rooms filled with ancient local fossils to galleries showcasing civic art, all while creaking along lovely old floorboards. It’s a wonderfully intimate and surprising spot that makes history feel incredibly immediate.

Collection Highlights

The star of the show is the Victorian operating theatre, but you'll also find an impressive collection of local Jurassic-era fossils, including marine reptiles, and changing displays of art from the city's own collection.

Visitor Information

It's right in the city center at 51 Priestgate, so it's easy to pop into. Best of all, general admission is completely free, though they sometimes have special ticketed exhibitions.
