Peak District Mining Museum
About This Museum
Tucked away in the stunning Matlock Bath gorge, this museum is a real surprise. It's housed in the grand old Temple building, a Victorian hydrotherapy spa that once drew crowds seeking cures in the local springs. The history here is palpable, telling the tough and often tragic stories of the lead miners who worked these hills for centuries. You can even squeeze into a mock-up of a mine shaft to get a feel for the cramped, dark conditions they endured.
Collection Highlights
The hands-on exhibits are fantasticβyou can try your hand at operating an air drill or climb through a replica mine shaft to understand the physical challenge. Don't miss the 'Man Engine' model, which shows the ingenious, if terrifying, method miners used to descend deep into the earth.
Visitor Information
It's right on the main parade in Matlock Bath, so it's easy to pop in after a walk along the river. The staff are incredibly knowledgeable and often have personal connections to the mining history, making any chat with them a highlight.
