About This Museum

You'd never guess that tucked away in a university city in the northeast of England is one of the only museums in the UK entirely dedicated to the art and archaeology of Asia and the ancient Middle East. It feels like a treasure chest where you can wander from the silent gaze of an ancient Egyptian mummy case straight into a room filled with the serene beauty of Chinese jade carvings and Japanese woodblock prints. The sheer scope is incredible, connecting cultures from the banks of the Nile all the way to modern Tokyo. It’s a wonderfully intimate place to get lost for an afternoon, full of quiet corners and unexpected finds.

Collection Highlights

Look for the delicate Chinese ceramics, a stunning array of samurai armor from Japan, and intricate Indian sculptures that seem to breathe with life.

Visitor Information

It's surprisingly easy to find on Elvet Hill Road in Durham, and as part of the university, it has a real scholarly yet welcoming vibe. Definitely check their website before you go as their opening hours can be unique!

Architecture & Building

From the outside, it's a solid, modern brick building that gives little hint of the wonders inside, but once you're in, the layout feels spacious and thoughtfully designed.
