About This Museum
If you want to feel the weight of nearly a thousand years of history, you come to Norton Priory. It all began in 1134 with a small community of Augustinian canons, and the story winds its way through dissolution, a Tudor mansion, and Georgian landscaping. Today, you can walk through the tranquil woodland and explore the ruins where it all started. The place has a quiet, almost contemplative atmosphere that makes it easy to forget you're in the 21st century.
Collection Highlights
You simply must see the magnificent stone statue of St. Christopher, one of the largest medieval examples ever found in Britain. Down in the undercroft, you can stand in the very rooms the canons used, their stonework still cool and solid after all this time. Don't miss the fascinating 'Puzzle Pots' either; we're still not entirely sure what they were for.
Visitor Information
It's a wonderful place to spend an afternoon wandering at your own pace. The walled garden is particularly lovely in the summer months, bursting with heritage plants. Just find Tudor Road off Windmill Hill – you'll know you're close when the world gets a lot greener.
Architecture & Building
The site is a fascinating architectural patchwork, from the skeletal sandstone ruins of the priory church to the surviving undercroft with its beautiful vaulted ceiling.
