About This Museum

Just off the old Washington Road, near where the Wear meets the sea, you'll find a place that holds onto our region's industrial and military spirit. It's not a fancy building, mind you, but a sprawling hangar and open grounds absolutely packed with machines that have stories to tell. You can almost hear the ghosts of engineers and pilots in the air around the Cold War jets and stalwart transport planes. It’s a proper hands-on sort of history, where you can get up close to the real things.

Collection Highlights

Look for the towering Victor bomber, a real Cold War sentinel, and don't miss the nimble Lightning fighter. There are also armoured vehicles from the local regiments and engines that powered it all.

Visitor Information

Check their social media before you set off as opening times can vary. There's a little shop tucked away inside for a souvenir, and it's all run by folk who are passionate about keeping these stories alive.

Architecture & Building

It's housed in former Royal Air Force maintenance hangarsβ€”functional, no-nonsense buildings from the Second World War era that are part of the history themselves.
