About This Museum

You might not expect to be moved by a fire station, but this place is a total surprise. Tucked away in a historic Edinburgh engine house, it's a heartfelt tribute to the bravery of Scotland's firefighters. I spent ages just wandering through the old appliance bay, soaking up the stories held within these red-brick walls. It’s far more personal and gripping than your average museum.

Collection Highlights

You can get up close to 'The Flying Scotsman,' a magnificent 1948 Dennis fire engine that looks ready to race off at a moment's notice. Don't miss the poignant display of historic uniforms and equipment, including helmets scarred by actual fires, which really hammers home the human cost of the job.

Visitor Information

Entry is free, which is fantastic, and it's run by incredibly knowledgeable retired firefighters who love to share a story. Just double-check their opening times online before you go, as they can be limited.

Architecture & Building

Housed in the original Lauriston Place Fire Station, it's a handsome, no-nonsense red-brick building with those classic arched doorways designed for horse-drawn engines to speed through.
