Lyme Regis Museum
About This Museum
It’s a little-known fact that the woman who found the first complete Ichthyosaur skeleton, Mary Anning, once lived on the very spot where this museum now stands. Perched precariously on Lyme Regis’s famous Cobb harbour wall, the building seems to grow directly from the ancient blue lias cliffs it celebrates. Inside, you’ll find a wonderfully eclectic mix that tells the story of the town, from its dramatic geological beginnings to its literary fame. It’s a place where the scent of salt air mingles with the dust of history.
Collection Highlights
The star attractions are undoubtedly Mary Anning's monstrous marine reptiles, including ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs, pulled from the local cliffs. Alongside these ancient giants, you can see delicate Georgian lace and learn why Jane Austen and John Fowles were so drawn to this corner of Dorset.
