About This Museum
Well now, Lews Castle isn't your typical austere fortress. It was built as a grand Victorian statement by Sir James Matheson, a man who made his fortune in tea, right here on the edge of Stornoway harbour. After a period of quiet decline, a magnificent restoration has breathed new life into its storied walls. Today, it stands not just as a beautiful building, but as the vibrant heart of our island's story.
Collection Highlights
Inside, you'll find the 'Story of the Lews', where the famous Lewis Chessmen—those whimsical twelfth-century walrus ivory pieces—are reunited with their homeland. The exhibits weave together everything from the age of clans and the upheaval of the Clearances to the enduring craft of tweed weaving.
Visitor Information
You can easily spend a full day here. Pop into the museum for an hour or two, then treat yourself to a coffee in the cafe with that stunning view over the bay. Don't forget to wander through the sprawling woodland grounds afterwards—they're perfect for clearing your head.

It's a splendid example of Scottish Baronial style, all pointed turrets and crow-stepped gables, making it look like it's sprung straight from a fairy tale.
