Kinneil Museum
About This Museum
Tucked away in the historic town of Bo'ness, Kinneil Museum is your friendly gateway to a surprisingly rich pocket of Scottish history. It sits right on the edge of Kinneil Estate, a vast green space that feels worlds away from the nearby towns. The museum itself tells the story of this area, from a Roman fortlet on the Antonine Wall to the ingenious inventors who once called the adjacent mansion home. It’s a small but fascinating place that connects you directly to centuries of local life.
Collection Highlights
Look for the brilliant working model of a Newcomen steam engine, a pioneering invention tested here by James Watt. You can also see beautifully preserved pieces of 17th-century painted ceilings salvaged from Kinneil House, offering a rare and colourful glimpse into the past.
Visitor Information
Best of all, entry to the museum is completely free. Before you leave, be sure to pick up a map for the nature trails that wind through the estate – they lead you right to the ruins of that Roman fortlet and the grand, if slightly haunting, Kinneil House.
Architecture & Building
Housed in a charming row of converted 19th-century cottages, originally built for estate workers, it has a wonderfully homely and unpretentious feel from the outside.
