Hunterian Museum
About This Museum
Tucked away on the main campus of the University of Glasgow, the Hunterian is Scotland's oldest public museum and feels like a true academic treasure. You'll find everything from Roman artifacts pulled from the Antonine Wall to dazzling geological specimens and even a gallery dedicated to the Scottish Colourists. The star attraction, without a doubt, is the permanent exhibit of James McNeill Whistler's work—it's one of the largest collections in the world. It’s a wonderfully eclectic place where you can easily lose an afternoon wandering through centuries of art, science, and history.
Collection Highlights
The entire medical collection of Dr. William Hunter forms the core, but don't miss 'The Hunterian Psalter', a stunning 12th-century illuminated manuscript. Downstairs, you can also walk through the meticulously reconstructed Mackintosh House, the former home of famed architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
Visitor Information
Entry is free for the main museum, though there's a small charge for the Mackintosh House. It's closed on Mondays, so plan your visit for later in the week.
Architecture & Building
The museum is housed within the grand, Gothic-revival main building of the university, a magnificent sandstone complex that gives the whole experience a distinctly scholarly and historic atmosphere.
