Hack Green Secret Nuclear Bunker
About This Museum
It’s a strange comfort to know that the British government’s plan for surviving a nuclear war was hidden beneath a quiet Cheshire field, masquerading as an innocuous rural building. Stepping inside is a visceral trip into the Cold War's stark reality, leaving the green English countryside behind for a labyrinth of reinforced concrete and existential dread. The air is cool and still, heavy with the scent of aged electronics and anxiety. You can almost hear the ghost of a scrambled BBC broadcast announcing the four-minute warning.
Collection Highlights
You'll find the genuine, colossal two-ton blast door that was meant to seal out Armageddon, and the chillingly utilitarian BBC studio from which 'the truth' would have been broadcast to survivors. Don't miss the hauntingly detailed Civil Defence maps and the decommissioned RAF Rotor system, its radar screens dark but still humming with silent purpose.
Visitor Information
Just follow the signs off the A530 – it's easier to find than you'd think for a secret bunker. Wear a jumper; it maintains its authentically cool, subterranean temperature year-round.
Architecture & Building
From the outside, it's an unassuming, almost drab 1950s single-story brick blockhouse that deliberately blends into the farmstead. Inside, it reveals itself as a deep, utilitarian complex of stark corridors and functional rooms, all encased in thick concrete designed for brutalist survival.
