Gem Rock Museum
About This Museum
Tucked away on Chain Road in Creetown, the Gem Rock Museum is a real hidden gem, if you'll pardon the pun. It feels less like a formal institution and more like stepping into a treasure chest, born from the passion of local rockhounds. You won't just see glittering stones behind glass; you'll hear the stories of the Galloway hills they came from. It’s a wonderfully personal place that captures the region's ancient geological heart.
Collection Highlights
The star of the show is 'The Creetown Emerald', a local find that still causes a stir. You can also marvel at giant, glittering amethyst geodes big enough to lose a cat in and touch a piece of iridescent ammonite fossil that's over 100 million years old.
Visitor Information
Don't rush your visit—the volunteers here are fonts of knowledge and love to chat. Kids get a real kick out of the hands-on discovery area, and the little cafe is perfect for a cuppa afterwards. It’s the kind of place you leave feeling brighter.
Architecture & Building
Housed in a converted old schoolhouse, it's got that lovely, unassuming stone-built character typical of the area, which makes the wonders inside all the more surprising.
