Garden Museum
About This Museum
You'd never guess that one of London's most delightful little museums is hidden inside a deconsecrated church, right next to the Archbishop's sprawling palace. I wandered in from the bustling Thames path and was immediately struck by the serene hush, with light streaming through the old windows onto displays about everything from tulip mania to guerrilla gardening. It feels less like a formal institution and more like stumbling upon a secret garden club that happens to have a stunning cafe tucked inside the nave. The whole place has this wonderfully peaceful, almost reverent atmosphere dedicated entirely to the art of gardening.
Collection Highlights
Look for the recreated 17th-century-style knot garden out back, a tribute to plant hunter John Tradescant who is buried here. Inside, you'll find everything from antique trowels and vintage seed packets to contemporary art inspired by nature.
Visitor Information
It's just a short walk from Lambeth North tube station, and honestly, their cafe is worth the trip alone for a slice of cake and a pot of tea in that beautiful space. Check their website for temporary exhibitions, as they're always changing.
Architecture & Building
The building itself is St Mary-at-Lambeth, a charming medieval parish church with a distinctive tower that was saved from demolition and repurposed into the museum.
