Gainsborough's House
About This Museum
People come to this lovely old brick house in Sudbury to walk in the footsteps of a true master, Thomas Gainsborough. You get this wonderful, intimate sense of his life, moving from rooms filled with his early, vibrant landscapes of the Suffolk countryside to the grand, elegant portraits that made him famous. It's not just paintings; you'll find his actual easel, personal letters, and even some beautiful period furniture that really makes the past feel present. I left feeling like I hadn't just seen art in a museum, but had spent an afternoon getting to know the artist himself.
Collection Highlights
His early portrait 'Mr and Mrs Andrews' poised in their countryside, the delicate brushwork of his later society portraits, and surprisingly personal items like his own mahogany writing cabinet and viola da gamba.
