Enniskillen Castle
About This Museum
Perched right on the banks of the River Erne, Enniskillen Castle has been the town's guardian for over 600 years. You can almost feel the weight of history in its stones, from its days as a stronghold of the Maguire chieftains to its time as a key garrison. Wandering through its courtyards and buildings, you'll uncover layers of Fermanagh's past that feel more like stories than exhibits. It’s not just a monument; it’s the very heart of the place.
Collection Highlights
Look for the poignant Inniskilling Dragoon uniforms and the museum's centrepiece, a huge Victorian jaunting car that once rattled along local roads. Upstairs, you'll find a gallery dedicated to the local regiments, their stories told through personal letters and gleaming silver.
Visitor Information
It's brilliantly central, just a short walk from the town centre. Pop into the cafe for a cup of tea after you've explored – it’s a local favourite.
Architecture & Building
A robust, stone-built castle from the 16th century with a distinctive watergate entrance, later additions include classic barrack blocks from its time as a military garrison.
