Dinosaurland Fossil Museum
About This Museum
Tucked away on Coombe Street in Lyme Regis, the Dinosaurland Fossil Museum is a truly special place. It's not housed in some modern building, but right inside our town's old Congregational church, which gives the whole experience a wonderfully unique feel. The collection itself is the life's work of a passionate local palaeontologist, and it’s absolutely bursting with more than 9,000 specimens. You get a real sense of one person's dedicated obsession here, surrounded by the echoes of both sermons and prehistoric life.
Collection Highlights
You'll find incredible ichthyosaur skeletons pulled from the local Jurassic Coast cliffs, along with delicate ammonites that look like stone snakes. One of the real treasures is a display showing fossilised dinosaur poop, which always gets a reaction. The sheer volume means you can spend ages peering into every cabinet and discovering something new.
Visitor Information
It’s a proper hands-on, old-school museum – you won't find many flashy screens here. Just come along, wander through the aisles between the pews, and let your curiosity guide you. It’s the kind of place where kids' eyes go wide and adults feel like explorers.
Architecture & Building
The building is the original 19th-century Congregational church, so you're walking on old floorboards beneath high ceilings and stained glass windows. They've kept much of the character intact; the fossils are displayed in what were once the church aisles, making for a wonderfully atmospheric setting.
