Dartmouth Museum
About This Museum
People often wander into our little museum on The Butterwalk looking for a story, and they never leave disappointed. You step straight from the cobbles of Duke Street into the creaking wooden embrace of a 17th-century merchant's house, where every room feels like a page from an old diary. Itβs not a grand, echoing hall but a personal collection of Dartmouth's lifeblood: its connection to the sea, the toil of its industries, and the quiet bravery of its people during the Great War. You come away feeling less like a tourist and more like you've been chatting with a knowledgeable local over a cup of tea.
Collection Highlights
You'll find beautifully detailed ship models that tell tales of trade and fishing, poignant reminders of the town's WWI history including personal letters from the front, and fascinating relics from our local industrial past, like tools from the nearby slate quarries.
Visitor Information
We're tucked away in that beautiful, pillared row known as The Butterwalk on Duke Street β you can't miss it. Just pop in; it's the perfect way to spend an hour or two when you need a break from the harbour breeze.
Architecture & Building
A fine example of a late Tudor merchant's house, with a charmingly uneven timber-framed facade and that iconic overhanging first floor you see on The Butterwalk.
