About This Museum

Honestly, the most incredible thing about Creswell Crags isn't even inside the museum – it's the setting itself. You're walking through this deep, dramatic limestone gorge, knowing that those very cliffs and caves sheltered Ice Age hunters. The small but brilliant museum is just your starting point for that journey back in time. It really makes you feel the presence of those ancient people in a way a bigger city museum just can't.

Collection Highlights

You get to see actual flint tools and weapons used by Neanderthals, which is mind-blowing when you think about it. But the real stars are Britain's only known Ice Age cave art – etchings of bison, deer, and birds hidden for millennia on the cave walls right outside.

Visitor Information

The best part is you can actually go on guided tours into some of the caves where all this history happened. Definitely book those ahead as they fill up! It’s a fantastic day out that’s both a beautiful nature walk and a trip deep into prehistory.

Architecture & Building

The visitor centre is a modern, low-slung building designed to nestle into the landscape without distracting from the natural drama of the gorge itself.
