Corrigall Farm Museum
About This Museum
Out on the windswept Orkney mainland, where the land is a patchwork of green and ancient stone, you'll find the Corrigan Farm Museum. It's a place that feels frozen in time, a traditional 'but and ben' farmstead that tells the story of Orcadian rural life from a bygone era. Stepping inside is like walking into the past, with the lingering scent of peat smoke and the tangible history of daily toil. This isn't a sterile gallery but a deeply evocative portal to an island way of life that once was.
Collection Highlights
The heart of the museum is the farmhouse itself, complete with a box bed and a classic Orkney chair pulled up to the hearth. Outside, you can explore the barn with its old farming implements and even see a horse-drawn grain mill called a horse-geng. Don't miss the kiln for drying grain and the distinctive flagstone 'neat-house' where cattle were kept.
Visitor Information
Heads up for nowβthe museum's gates are temporarily closed, so be sure to check their official channels before you make the trip. When it reopens, it's one of those wonderfully free-to-enter sites run by Orkney Islands Council.
Architecture & Building
It's a classic example of an Orkney longhouse, built from local stone and flagstones with a distinctive pitched roof. The whitewashed walls and small-paned windows are typical of the 19th-century 'but and ben' style, where people and animals lived under one roof.
