About This Museum

Honestly, what makes Castle Bromwich Historic Gardens so special is that it feels like a secret you've stumbled upon. It's this massive ten-acre walled garden, completely run by passionate volunteers, which gives the whole place such a lovely, cared-for feel. You can easily lose an afternoon just wandering between the different 'rooms', from the formal patterns of the West Lawn to the quiet shade of the woodland walk. And then there's the holly maze – it’s just pure, simple fun that takes you right back to being a kid.

Collection Highlights

They've got over 600 different plants tucked away in here! The herbaceous borders are a riot of colour in summer, and I was really taken with the historic apple orchard and the beautifully restored greenhouses. It’s not stuffy at all; everything is clearly labelled so you can actually learn what you're looking at.

Visitor Information

Since it's volunteer-run, definitely check their website for opening times before you go. It's surprisingly easy to get to, just off Chester Road in Birmingham, and there's free parking which is a huge bonus.

Architecture & Building

The star is definitely the beautiful red-brick walls that enclose the entire garden – they make it feel like your own private estate. The on-site hall is a stunning Jacobean mansion providing a perfect backdrop.
