Camera Obscura & World of Illusions
About This Museum
Perched high on Edinburgh's historic Castlehill, this place is far more than a museum—it's a playful assault on the senses. Forget hushed galleries; here, you're encouraged to touch, play, and question your own reality across five wildly entertaining floors. The star of the show is the original Victorian-era Camera Obscura, a magical device that projects a live, moving image of the city onto a viewing table. It’s a captivating experience that has been wowing visitors for well over a century.
Collection Highlights
Get lost in the Mirror Maze, shrink to miniature size in the Ames Room, and walk through a swirling Vortex Tunnel that will challenge your balance. You can also bend light in the Light Harp and marvel at mind-bending holograms. Each floor is packed with interactive puzzles and illusions that are as fun for adults as they are for kids.
Visitor Information
Be prepared for lots of stairs and allow at least two hours to see everything—you'll need it! It's incredibly popular, so booking online in advance is a smart move to avoid the queues snaking down the Royal Mile.
Architecture & Building
The experience is housed in a historic sandstone tower that feels like a classic part of Edinburgh's Old Town skyline.
